First Responder Therapy · Nanaimo & Across BC
You've spent your career helping others. You deserve the same.
Specialized trauma and occupational stress therapy for first responders in Nanaimo and across BC. Mohamad Shabib has direct clinical experience working with paramedics, firefighters, police officers, nurses, and social workers through a concurrent trauma and addictions program at Edgewood, Nanaimo.
We understand the culture — and the barriers
First responders are trained to push through, stay focused, and keep others safe. That same training can make it incredibly hard to admit you're struggling — or to believe that what you're experiencing is serious enough to address.
The stigma in first responder culture around mental health is real. The fear of being seen as weak, of affecting your career, of not being believed — these are real barriers. We know this. You won't need to explain the job, justify why it was hard, or convince anyone that what you experienced matters.
Mohamad has worked directly with first responders at Edgewood in Nanaimo through a specialized concurrent trauma and addictions program. He understands occupational trauma not just theoretically — but from direct clinical work with the people who do this job.
Signs you may be carrying too much:
Intrusive memories or images from calls you can't shake
Nightmares, disturbed sleep, or hypervigilance off-duty
Emotional numbness — feeling nothing when you used to feel something
Increased drinking, substance use, or other ways of coping
Anger, irritability, or withdrawal at home
Feeling disconnected from your family or partner
Dreading going to work — or being unable to stop thinking about it
Cumulative stress that's built up over years, not one incident
Who we work with
Our approach
First responder trauma requires specialized clinical approaches. We don't use a one-size-fits-all model.
EMDR
The most evidence-based treatment for PTSD. Processes traumatic memories — single incidents and cumulative exposure — without requiring you to describe them in detail.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Addresses the protective parts that shut down emotion on the job, and the wounded parts carrying what was too much to feel at the time.
Concurrent Trauma & Addictions
Mohamad has specific training and experience in the intersection of trauma and substance use — common in first responders as a coping strategy.
CBT for Occupational Stress
Restructures the cognitive patterns — guilt, hyperresponsibility, black-and-white thinking — that develop from years in high-stakes environments.
Somatic Trauma Work
Addresses the physiological hyperarousal and shutdown patterns that come from chronic exposure to threat.
Couples & Family Support
Occupational trauma doesn't stay at the station. We also work with partners and families navigating the impact of first responder stress.
