PTSD & CPTSD Therapy · Nanaimo & Across BC
PTSD doesn't have to be a life sentence
Post-traumatic stress is the nervous system's attempt to protect you from something it hasn't finished processing. Specialized PTSD and CPTSD therapy in Nanaimo and across BC, using EMDR and IFS — two of the most effective trauma treatments available.
PTSD and CPTSD can look like:
Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares about past events
Feeling emotionally numb or detached from your life
Hypervigilance — always scanning for danger, never feeling safe
Avoiding anything that reminds you of what happened
Sudden intense reactions that feel out of proportion
Difficulty trusting others or forming close relationships
A persistent sense of shame, guilt, or feeling permanently damaged
CPTSD: emotional flashbacks, inner critic, difficulty knowing who you are
If any of these resonate, you are not alone — and things can get better.
PTSD therapy can help you:
Process traumatic memories so they lose their grip on your present
Reduce hypervigilance and feel safe in your own body
Understand your triggers and respond rather than react
Rebuild trust in yourself and others
Reconnect with your sense of self and identity
Live a life no longer organized around avoiding pain
Our therapeutic approach
We tailor every approach to what you actually need. No single method works for everyone — we draw from a range of evidence-based tools to find what fits you.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — the gold-standard treatment for PTSD. Helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer trigger distress. Our lead therapist has advanced EMDRIA training.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Works with the protective and wounded parts of the self that emerged from trauma — helping them unburden the pain they carry and restore inner safety and harmony.
Somatic Trauma Therapy
Addresses the way trauma is stored in the body — working with physical sensations, breath, and nervous system regulation to support healing from the ground up.
CBT for Trauma
Cognitive processing approaches specifically adapted for PTSD — restructuring the distorted beliefs about self and world that trauma creates.
Stabilization & Grounding
Before processing trauma directly, we build the internal resources and safety needed to do that work effectively and without overwhelm.
IFOT
Indigenous Focused Oriented Therapy — for clients whose trauma intersects with cultural identity, intergenerational harm, or colonization.
PTSD vs CPTSD — what's the difference?
PTSD typically develops from a single traumatic event or a defined period of trauma. CPTSD (Complex PTSD) develops from prolonged, repeated trauma — often in childhood, or situations where escape was impossible, such as abusive relationships, childhood neglect, or refugee experiences. CPTSD tends to include additional symptoms like chronic shame, difficulty regulating emotions, and a fragmented sense of identity. Both are treatable. Our therapists are experienced with both presentations and will tailor the approach to your specific history.
